Which bottle teat should I choose for my baby?
The choice of bottle teat depends on the type of feeding you provide, which is influenced by your baby’s age and sucking strength. Therefore, the right bottle teat is very personal. Pay close attention to your baby’s feeding habits and adjust the bottle teat accordingly. The ages listed on the packaging are merely indicative.
Difrax offers different sizes of bottle teats, ranging from Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, to Extra Large. These sizes refer to the size of the feeding hole. All our S-bottles come standard with a size S bottle teat, except for the XL porridgel bottle.
Our recommendations are as follows:
- Size XS is suitable only for thin liquids and can be used from birth. The XS teat is a 1-2-3 teat with three different slow flow rates: XXS, XS, and Small. This 1-2-3 XS dosing teat can only be used in combination with the Difrax 1-2-3 ring. Available in the Natural variant.
- Size S is used for thin liquids. The size S teat is standard on all S-bottles, except for the XL cereal bottle.
- Size M is used for thin and thickened liquids, starting from around 3 months of age.
- Size L is used for thickened and thick liquids, such as thickened milk with rice flour or porridge.
- We recommend size XL only for very thick porridge from 9 months onwards. The XL bottle teat is only available for the wide S-bottles.
When choosing the right size bottle teat, your baby’s feeding behaviour is key. A typical feeding session should last about 20 minutes, regardless of age. If your baby consistently takes longer to feed, it’s advisable to switch to a larger bottle teat size. The 1-2-3 bottle teat can be helpful for babies with varying feeding patterns or when switching between thick and thin liquids.
Sometimes a baby might still choke with a size S teat. In this case, the XS dosing teat might be a good option. If this doesn’t work, you can try the dental bottle teat. This teat has the hole at the top, allowing the milk to flow more slowly.
