For babies under 3 months who are drinking thin liquids like milk with a size S (small) bottle teat, it’s not uncommon for feeding to go too quickly. This “start-up” issue is common and can occur with both premature and full-term babies, especially in the first six weeks.
For young babies, self-regulating their intake with their tongue can be challenging due to their strong sucking reflex. The coordination between sucking, dosing, swallowing, and breathing might not be fully developed yet, which is why even a size S (small) teat may flow too quickly. The good news is that this problem is usually temporary.
A good solution could be our 1-2-3 XS Variflow teat. This XS teat is specially developed for babies for whom the Small size is still too fast, as well as for premature babies. What makes this teat unique is that it has three slow-flow settings: XXS, XS, and Small.
Additionally, our dental bottle teat might also provide a (temporary) solution. This teat has a hole at the top, which allows for more controlled milk flow, reducing the likelihood of choking.
Another option is to thicken the milk.
